Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity 2015

H+K hosts female firsts at cannes

With only 6% of the top 250 films of 2013 directed by women, editorial director and publisher Jefferson Hack talks to Samantha Morton about her experiences in the movie industry and explores the benefits of increased female representation in the director’s chair.

They discuss the creative challenges she has faced on the other side of the camera including directorial debut The Director as well as her involvement in Dazed’s Female Firsts - a kickstarter production fund awarded to revolutionary female directors who are fighting to bridge the gap in the industry’s gender imbalance. It will be a bold shift that will bolster female creativity with the potential to revolutionise film as we know it.

English actress and film director Samantha Morton has won a BAFTA TV Award, a Golden Globe Award and has been nominated twice for an Academy Award and once for an Emmy Award.

Starring in roles from Minority Report to John Carter to Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown, she has always been vocal on the lack of well-written roles for women.
